How to Use Fonts Like a Pro
Webinar for Graphic Designers

90 live minutes that will change how you see, choose and set type. Practical tips from a type designer that will make your work look more professional, in Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma, Affinity or Canva.

Tue, Oct 27 · 4 PM CET · 90 min · Live on Zoom
Sound familiar?

You chose a beautiful font, but the design still looks unfinished?

Most typography problems in design have nothing to do with the fonts themselves:

  • 01Headlines that look crowded and capitals that feel cramped
  • 02Font pairings that simply don't work together
  • 03Paragraphs that are tiring to read
  • 04Alternates and ligatures you liked but never found
What you will learn

Learn to see type the way a type designer does.

Chapter 01 18 min

The anatomy of a font

Learn to read any typeface the way a type designer does. Every letter is built from the same few parts, and once you can see them, you understand how to pick the right font for every project.

  • How letters are built: stems, bowls, counters, apertures, terminals, serifs and spines, explained in plain language, not as a list of definitions
  • x-height, contrast and stress, the three details that decide how big, how elegant and how readable a font feels
  • The optical tricks hidden in every good font: why an O is drawn taller than an H, why crossbars sit above the centre and why horizontal strokes are thinner than vertical ones
Chapter 02 14 min

Font pairing done right

Font pairing should never be guesswork. You will learn simple principles that will help you pair fonts faster, check whether you even need a second font at all, and recognise the common elements that make typefaces easy to pair.

  • Why one well-built family often beats two fonts, and how to get the most out of weights, widths and italics
  • Superfamilies: the safest professional way to pair a serif and a sans
  • The structure rule: pair fonts that share a skeleton and differ in detail, and the pairings that always look like a mistake
  • Five ready-made pairing recipes for editorial, branding, posters and social media templates
Chapter 03 22 min

Using fonts like a pro

This is where good typography happens. The spacing and detail decisions in this chapter are what separate amateur work from professional work, and clients notice them without ever knowing why.

  • Leading: the comfortable line spacing range for body text, and why headlines need much less
  • Kerning and tracking: when to trust the font, when to adjust by eye and how much space capitals and small text really need
  • Line length: the ideal number of characters per line and a quick test you can do in seconds
  • Alignment, clean rags, widows and orphans, and how to fix them without stretching type
  • Hierarchy and type scales
  • The small details that make work look expensive: real quotes and apostrophes, the right dash, lining and old style figures, true small caps and why fake bold and stretched type ruin a design
  • Screen versus print, and how to keep text readable on phones
Chapter 04 13 min

Making the most of ligatures

Many fonts include dozens of extra characters you have never seen. You will learn what they are, when they should be used, and exactly how to unlock them in the software you use every day.

  • Standard and discretionary ligatures, contextual alternates, swashes and stylistic sets, explained simply
  • Step by step in Illustrator and Photoshop: the Glyphs panel, the OpenType options and on-canvas alternates
  • The same features in InDesign, Figma and Affinity
  • Canva: what it can do today, what it cannot, and a simple workaround for using special characters
  • Script fonts that connect correctly, and the one setting that makes them work
Chapter 05 8 min

Behind the scenes

A look inside my own process, from the first sketch to a finished font family, so you understand what goes into a well-made font and can recognise one when you see it.

  • How a font is made: sketches, key letters, spacing, kerning, weights and testing
  • My personal checklist for spotting a good font: spacing, kerning, accents and real styles
  • Variable fonts in one minute: what they are and when they help

Alen Kapetanovic

I have been drawing letters since 2018. As the founder of SilverStag Type Foundry, I design, release and support every one of more than 100 commercial font families myself, from the first sketch to the last kerning pair.

Every day I see the same small typography details lift good designs into great ones. This session gathers everything I wish someone had shown me at the start, explained simply and shown live.

Questions

Who is this webinar for?

Graphic designers at any stage, from students and self-taught designers to experienced professionals who want a sharper eye for type. If you choose fonts for clients, brands, social media or print, this session is for you.

Is this a type design course?

No. This is about using fonts, not making them. You will learn to choose, pair and set type with confidence in the apps you already use, all explained in plain language with live examples.

Which software do I need?

None to attend. The examples use Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Figma, Affinity and Canva, so whatever you work in, you will see exactly where to find each setting.

I mostly design in Canva. Is this still useful?

Yes. Spacing, pairing and the small details work the same everywhere, and the ligatures chapter shows exactly what Canva can do today plus a workaround for special characters.

When is it in my time zone?

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 4 PM in Madrid (CET). That is 3 PM in London, 11 AM in New York and 8 AM in Los Angeles.

How do I join?

Right after checkout you get an order confirmation. Your personal joining link arrives by email on Tuesday, October 20, one week before the session, with a reminder on the day. If you book after October 20, the link arrives right away.

Will there be a recording?

Yes. Every ticket includes the full replay, sent by email after the session and available to watch until November 26, 2026.

Can I ask questions?

Yes. The session ends with a live Q&A, and you can submit one of your own designs in advance for the live type clinic.

Can I get an invoice for my business?

Yes. You'll get an invoice with your order. If you need any changes, like your company name, address or VAT number, just email me and I'll sort it out.
